We are very excited to share a short interview with Sor after his live performance in Amsterdam. Sor is one of the biggest hip-hop artists from the Netherlands, critically acclaimed for his album “Bae Doven”, released in 2023.
Studio Talks gained exclusive access to Sor’s backstage after his sold-out show at Tolhuistuin, where Andrej spoke to Sor about the live performance, new music and his summer plans.
What are your feelings about the show? How was it?
We wanted to do a show. The listeners and the fans were asking for shows and for new music. We were like; 'You know what? F*ck it. Let's just do a show with new songs just to feel something'. The way I make albums and produce the beats, is that I want to make sure on this album that mostly everything is high energy.
So I wanted to test it out even when they don't know the song, because that's when it's a real test for me, and they love it and they go crazy and I have to put it out there. So, great show!
You tested some new songs. You saw how the crowd reacted. What do you think? Is it ready?
My crowd is very honest. They're very f*cking honest. At some songs, I was like, 'I don't want to bring this one out'. After, I did the song, they were like; 'No, you have to bring it out'. But I saw maybe ten people weren’t saying, 'Bring it out'. So I'm like, I'm going to keep it in the safe. The reactions were pure. They know that if I doubt a song, they would likely doubt it too. I had about 90% saying 'drop it', 10% with a 'hmm' on a few songs. So I was like, this is perfect. I won't bring them out. I won't release them.
Can we expect a new album or some new releases in the coming weeks/months?
Probably not...
I was in the studio last night, and I'll be in the studio in a few hours again. For the next few months, I'm going back to the studio to finish some of the songs that they and I really like, and to delete some of the songs I didn't like performing live. So, don’t expect any new music in the next few months. Probably not, I'm a nerd.
That's unlucky.
The summer is coming. Are you planning on doing some touring, maybe some festivals?
Maybe we're going to do the 'Trial (&error)' show again in Rotterdam because I feel like I'm neglecting them at this point.
I want to see them again. It is a different energy, and there are a few festivals here and there. I can mention a few. Sziget in Budapest. It’s the first time for me. It's like the third time doing a show outside the Netherlands; and Belgium doesn't count. Belgium and the Netherlands, it's like the same. So Sziget, I can’t mention a few orders. They're not announced yet, but it's going to be fun summer.
What can’t be missing in your backstage?
Lollipops.
Everyone has their little thing you do before you go on stage. And even when we're with the orchestra, we do a shot or two. That's normal. But I always got to have a lollipop. It calms my voice down a bit. I always have a lollipop with me. If I release this right now, I know how I'm going to sound.
And last question, what is your currently number one listened-to song this month? What music are you inspired by?
Okay, it’s; 'Que Saudade do Você' by Mc Kaio and MC L da Vinte.
